April 1, 2016 - A message from Board Chariman Carolyn Bradford and the Board Members:
Today will start "A New Beginning" for the Dade County School System. Before I introduce Dr. Jan Harris, I would like to share with you how much the Board of Education appreciates the input, inquiry, and support we received to find our next quality leader. We look forward to continued collaborative work with our county, our Chamber of Commerce, our city, our business partners, our parents, our school staffs and councils, our local legislators, and entities of higher education to provide for the growth and development of our community.
Today we want to welcome and introduce to our community, Dr. Jan Harris. Dr. Harris is a seasoned superintendent who has been instrumental in leading schools and systems to become strong educational environments where students discover their gifts and find success in developing those gifts.
Dr. Harris has served as a teacher, an assistant principal and principal at both the middle and high school levels, and as a superintendent during her 34 years as an education leader. Increasing student achievement has been her primary objective in these roles and as a result she has been given numerous accolades. She has been awarded the Childhaven's Dot Causey Distinguished Service Award, the Heart of an Eagle Award from the Boy Scouts of America, the Woman of Distinction Award from the Girl Scouts of North/Central Alabama, the PTA High School Principal of the Year, and Alabama's District 8 Superintendent of the Year in 2009. She also was the recipient of the Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement in Doctoral Studies in Education Leadership from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN and was named the University of North Alabama's Alumnus of the Year in 2001-2002. Community Service is certainly one of her gifts as evidence by being named the Cullman Times 2010 Distinguished Citizen of the Year. She has authored and published many news and journal articles, as well as, books designed to enhance the professional learning for school administrators. A woman of strong faith, she brings a heart and passion for learning to all who meet her. The board pledges our support to her today.
